Facebook Past 50% Mark in US Penetration!

You can no longer dismiss Facebook as a FAD.

The first “factoid” revealed Thursday (3/24) from the upcoming 2011 Infinite Dial Report from Arbitron and Edison Research is that more than half of all Americans ages 12 and older are on Facebook. The study, fielded in January of 2011, found that 51% of every teen, man or woman has a profile on this dominant site. That’s a majority of all Americans age 12-plus. And Edison Vice President Tom Webster, who presented the peek at the study in Arbitron’s monthly PPM client call, noted that the 51% is not just among those with Internet connections, but all Americans. “We have been tracking the growth of Facebook since 2008 and have watched it go from 8% usage just three years ago to 51% today,” noted Webster. The teasing stat comes for the 2011 Infinite Dial Report, which Arbitron and Edison will release on April 5th with an online webinar. The findings come from a national survey of 2,020 persons age 12 and older. This is the 19th in a series of studies Arbitron and Edison have conducted since 1998 on topics relating to digital media. RBR-TVBR observation: What about Twitter, you ask? It gets a lot of hype, to be sure. But it logged in at 8%, far below Facebook in terms of penetration.
